Gert Jan was a very successful Junior and Young Rider winning European Championship medals in 1997, 2000 and 2001. In 2003, he was selected for his first senior European Championships, where the team finished 8th. His partner Pia-Luise Aufrecht is a showjumper at international level. His sister Marleen is also an elite jumper.
Since turning professional, Gert Jan has represented his country in a World Championships and and Olympic Games (2004).
