Edouard Etienne Alphonse de Rothschild was born on the 27th of December 1957 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris. He is the son of Guy de Rothschild and Marie-Hélène van Zuylen van Nyevelt and belongs to the French branch of the Rothschild family.
After graduating law in Paris university he moved to the United States and studied business at the New York University business school where he took an MBA.
He then worked as an investment banker in London and Paris, before founding the Rothschild & Cie. Banque in 1987 with his half-brother David René de Rothschild and his cousin Eric de Rothschild.
In 2003 Edouard de Rothschild withdrew from operating the business. In 2005 a new area of business opened: Edouard de Rothschild became the major shareholder of the french daily newspaper Liberation, and since then he has been the major shareholder and chairman of the renowned publication.
Further areas of business include seats on the supervisory boards of various companies, the family's own vineyard Château Lafite, and management of the thoroughbred stud Haras de Meautry in Normandie.
Edouard has four children (David, Alienor, Ferdinand and Louis).
