Eric has had a long and successful career in show jumping and has worked as coach of the Spanish and Norwegian showjumping teams.. He received the 2016 Andre Heijligers Award for the person who has contributed the most to equestrianism. His son Maikel was part of the Dutch showjumping squad that won silver in the team event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. His other son Eric Jr. has also competed in the sport at an elite level.
He owns Springstal Van der Vleuten in Someren, Netherlands. He and his family moved there from their base in Mierlo in January 2013. Together with his son Eric Jr. and business partner Kees Otelar, in 2016 he launched Future Sport Horse Sales. The company ran its first auction of selected horses in September 2016. His horse Utascha SFN was the first horse owned by the Showjumping Fund of the Netherlands, which was set up in 2006 with the aim of keeping the best showjumping horses in the Netherlands and making them available to top riders.
