Yann, originally from France, began riding aged 10 when his parents encouraged him and his older brother to actively pursue sports. Once he tried riding, horses became his main focus and within two years he was competing.
He moved to North America in 1999 and after a two-week visit with Canadian rider Eric Lamaze he took up a full time job coaching, riding and training at Lamaze's Torrey Pines Stables in Ontario. He initially still competed for his native France but took up Canadian citizenship in 2008.
He was forced to return to France to complete his required civilian service where his athlete status allowed him to work in the cavalry unit. He served 10 months of service.
