Profiles
Born in Limerick, Shane got his first pony at the age of five and hunted throughout his childhood. He says he got into show jumping, "because I'd always been mad keen on horses, and I was desperate to get out of school." Shane represented Ireland at Pony International level becoming European Silver medallist and winning the opportunity to spend some time in Nelson Pessoa's yard in Europe. He then progressed through Junior and Young rider teams to the Senior Irish National Team where he is a regular Nation's Cup team member and has represented Ireland in a European Championships and a World Championships.
He usually rides between eight and ten horses a day, "although I once rode 34 on the Saturday and 28 on the Sunday of Gowran show in Ireland - Francis Connors and I were having a wager on who could ride the most in a day - and we didn't even win! Adrian Williams did - he rode 36." He says if he didn't work with horses he would be a poet - "at least I'd get paid for all the talking I do!" he jokes. Shane's philosophy is to, "Believe in yourself".
